Navigating Tariffs and Computer Purchases: Buy Now or Wait?

April 30, 2025

As we approach the end of support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, many businesses are contemplating whether to upgrade their computer systems now or delay purchases. The decision is influenced by several factors, including current tariffs and anticipated market demand.

Recent changes in tariff policies have created a complex landscape for tech purchases. While tariffs on certain tech products have been paused or are not yet significantly affecting prices, the situation remains fluid. For instance, the de minimis exemption for low-cost packages from China has been ended, potentially impacting prices for some components. However, overall, the immediate impact on computer prices has been minimal.

The end of support for Windows 10 means that after October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical assistance. This deadline is expected to drive a surge in demand for new computers as businesses and individuals upgrade to Windows 11. Analysts predict that this increased demand will lead to higher prices, potentially more significant than any current tariff impacts.

Given the minimal impact of tariffs and the anticipated price surge due to increased demand, it may be prudent to consider purchasing new computers sooner rather than later. Delaying purchases until closer to the Windows 10 end-of-support date could result in higher costs and limited availability due to the rush to upgrade.

Of course there aare other factors to consider. How will your organization be affected by the ecomonic turmoil over the next year or longer? Are other costs expected to increase for your business that have a higher priority than new computers?

The bottomline is, can your business accept the risk of having unsupported computers after October 14th? The cost of a cyber event is likely exponentially greater than any tariff-based price increases.
